I'm going to put it out there straight away - Biffy Clyro are one of my favourite bands. Always have been and always will be - I mean come on, look at the picture at the top of this blog! When non-album single Mountains was released in late 2008 however, I was a little skeptical. Sure it was great, but it wasn't amazing. I loved Puzzle and I thought it was great that the band had made that album, but I wanted something they hadn't done before and to me it felt like Mountains was more of the same. So when I read that Biffy had a new single, I felt a small amount of trepidation. Would it be more of the same? Would it be an introduction to Puzzle Part 2?
Boy, don't I feel like an idiot. That Golden Rule is AWESOME. It's fast, visceral, melodic and aggressive. It doesn't sound like the Biffy of old, but it doesn't sound like the Biffy we've recently come to know. It's safe to say I've listened to the song a fair few times, but I still get shivers up my spine every time Simon Neil sings, "I want to scream one last death medley." And that ending?! The last minute of the song turns into some weird stoner jam with odd timing, backed by a lovely string section - and no vocals. If there was ever a song to hit back at the detractors who felt Biffy Clyro had 'sold out' with Puzzle, then this is the one to do it. I for one, based solely on this song, am extremely excited about the new album (titled Only Revolutions) and I cannot wait to see where Biffy takes us from here.
You can listen to That Golden Rule and/or watch the video for it here
Only Revolutions should be out late September
